12 August Stragglers of Asia vs The Guards CC at Burton Court, London SW3.
Result: Stragglers won by 6 wickets
Match Report:
Burton Court did not disappoint. The setting is beautiful and the wicket looked fantastic. 11 Stragglers arrived in good time. We provided Guards with our candidate, Marcus Hett and Tom Whyte gallantly agreed to play for Guards so we would be 10 apiece. Given Guards were on 5 the Wednesday before, we were delighted to be able to play a 40 over match.
Allsop won the toss (his only contribution to the day) and we opened with two candidates: Alex Gregory and Paddy Connolly. Within 6 overs both had struck twice leaving Guards 4-22. Both bowled with increasing pace, swing and accuracy and it was a joy to watch.
We quickly changed the bowling around and candidate Durham (off spin) and Dawson just picked up from where the openers left off. Runs were coming more readily for Guards (it’s a 1 or 4 type of ground) but wickets continued to fall. Captain Huda steadied the ship somewhat and helped the tail to wag. Bashall and Holliday looked impressive as the score topped 100., but Calder brought their innings to a swift conclusion with a very smart c&b leaving Guards all out for 140 after 25 overs.
A tasty tea was taken between innings and then Messrs Asher and Russell strode out to the crease. Both were looking good until Russell was caught at short cover for 10. Asher and Jonty Dexter (younger brother to Steve) continued scoring freely. Asher fell for 21 and Calder took up the mantle with gusto with a quick 29 off 20. Dexter carried on from his 41 the week before and carried his bat with a well deserved 52*.
We had around 20 supporters, which made the win even more fun. Post match beers meant we stayed at the ground for a couple of hours after we had finished.
That’s back to back wins against Guards, which is great to see.
