Stragglers of Asia vs Pangbourne College
Bigside Ground, Pangbourne College
Result: Pangbourne College won by 8 wickets
Match Report:
Poor weather had scuppered the first two fixtures of the season, so waking up to blue skies was a welcome sight & we could finally get the season started.
The Stragglers had struggled with mid-week availability, and a late injury withdrawal so were very grateful to the College for lending us 3 players, significantly reducing the average age of our side.
With the weather set fair the Stragglers enjoyed their only victory of the day, winning the toss & electing to bat.
An early season pitch that was slightly two paced at times didn’t make life easy, combined with athleticism and organisation from the fielding side meant scoring proved tricky. The frustration of not seeing the board tick over led to a few big shots that found the fielders. The somewhat customary Stragglers collapse made an early appearance, and despite a few noteworthy moments of resistance from Perry and Boulter, we succumbed to a fairly miserable 81 all out. Credit should be given to the Pangbourne bowlers that had the ball swinging around and bowled well.
With not much on the board to defend the Stragglers looked for early wickets, and the opening bowlers Danny Dawson & Charles Fidler both performed well and made life difficult for their batsmen. They each picked up one wicket, but deserved more for their efforts and if we had put more runs on the board the pressure they exerted would have made life difficult for the opposition. After a couple of early wickets gave us all something to cheer Greenwood, batting at 3 for the College, applied himself playing with real discipline and taking the opportunities when they presented themselves and scored a chanceless 36 runs to steer the home team to victory.
The game was played in very good spirit, and Pangbourne College were great hosts. After a quick post game beer it was time for most to do battle with the M4.
