Stragglers of Asia vs Hurlingham Club CC at Hurlingham Club, SW6.
Result: Stragglers of Asia won by 5 wickets
Match Report:
When our very own James Melhorn arrived at the Hurlingham Club marginally late, as he briskly made his way around the boundary edge towards the changing rooms, for a brief moment, after the game he reported that he thought he was at the wrong match. From one end our very own Billy Gravett was steaming in, firing in with serious pace, and from the other our guest for the day and hopefully future candidate, Rafeh Jafri, was gracefully gliding in making some lovely shapes away from the Hurlingham openers also at rapid pace. Our valiant leader Sye Razvi had assembled a promising line-up with an impressive opening attack. This year there was no Edward Doughty to ping the opening bowlers into the local neighbourhood, and in the end it was the spin of Paddy McDuell (7-51) and the return of Rafeh Jafri (2-33) in the guise of fizzing leg spinner which wrestled the Hurlingham Club to a total 187 all out. With the incoming wet weather always in play, but the track and outfield looking as splendid as usual, the chase was on.
All of the top order looked good and got good starts, including a very welcome return for James Musgrove. As the clouds gathered, the heart of the Stragglers innings was a family affair, with Ian Salter batted beautifully supporting a stylish and aggressive innings from brother-in-law Billy Gravett, up the order in front of his brother Harry. Safely back in the pavilion with victory in the bag, both the bar and the heavens opened. A successful and most enjoyable day skippered and engineered with the panache of a youthful Sye, required with neither bat nor ball, but adding advanced selection skills and tactical guile to the day.
