5th August 2022 Stragglers of Asia vs a Sunbury CC XI at Sunbury CC
Result: Stragglers of Asia won by 159 runs
Match Report:
On a beautiful sunny day a strong Stragglers side won the toss and went into bat against Sunbury. Chris Rogers and Conor Brown got us off to a very good start. Chris eventually fell for 32 and Andrew De Cruz (C) joined Conor. They added 97 for the second wicket with Conor making a brilliant 85 and Andrew a classy 38. Tim Lerwill was on the receiving end of a beauty early in his innings, which brought the returning Jonny Barran to the crease to join Joe Reid. These two put on an unbeaten 82 with Joe scoring an impressive 58 no and Jonny 22 no. A score of 262 for 4 off our 35 overs looked like an extremely competitive score but we knew we needed to bowl and field well given the quality of the track and quick outfield.
Tom Whyte and Danny Dawson opened the bowling and set the tone for the whole innings with some very tight and accurate overs that put pressure on the Sunbury batsmen straightaway and took early wickets, both bowlers taking two apiece. They were followed by spin twins of Charith Cabraal and Alastair Wright (G). They continued from where the openers had left off, finding a lot of purchase from the surface and taking two wickets each. One of them being a breath-taking one-handed catch by Joe Reid at square leg off a full-blooded pull shot. Jonny Barran and Tim Lerwill then kept the bowling standards high, Tim very mercurial going for only 5 runs off his 4 overs. Jonny picked up a couple of wickets and mention should be made to Willy Boulter who was flawless behind the stumps all day, the only extras coming from leg byes. We eventually bowled Sunbury out for 103 in the 29th over, giving the Stragglers a victory by 159 runs.
