Dear Brigands Opposition,

I very much hope you have wintered well and are looking forward to the 2022 season. 2022 promises to be an especially exciting year for Broadhalfpenny Down – the 250th Year since the first First Class game was played on the Down – and in association with the Broadhalfpenny Down Trust the Brigands are leading the charge in organising a range of commemorative games and fund raising initiatives.

For the Brigands, we have a terrific opposition line up which this season includes the re-introduction of evening games, including a game against Fullers (Bat & Ball Landlords) during the 250th cricket week. Suffice to say, we are very much looking forward to our games of cricket with you and the opportunity to host you on the Down during this august season. Details of all the fixtures on the Down are at the attached and will be available on the website https://www.broadhalfpennydown.com/

Please see the link below which advertises the commemorative Stones which individuals and clubs are being invited to buy to mark the 250th year and their personal association with the ground. They will be mounted by the monument and the offer is open to anyone who would like to have their name or club name literally set in stone at the base of the monument at the “cradle of the game”.

I would also like to draw your attention to the headline matches during cricket week. Emulating the greats of the 18th Century we are recruiting an “All England XI” to play Hampshire “All Stars XI”….

From Mike Beardall Chairman of the Broadhalfpenny Down Trust:

As you may be aware this is a special year for Broadhalfpenny Down.  May I draw your attention to our headline matches on 24 and 25 Jun.  We have been working very closely with Hampshire who have kindly agreed to field “All Star” teams on the Friday (Men) and the Saturday (Women). The recruitment of a quality opposition to play these sides has to say the least proved problematic, however, we have taken things into our own hands and are using the internet and our website to spread the word far and wide and recruit and select our own ‘All England’ sides.  In summary, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Broadhalfpenny Down more firmly on the map so anything you can do to help by spreading the word would be very much appreciated.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is anything I can assist you with regarding the above matters.

Kind regards,

Gerry Northwood
