Result: Lost by 11 runs
Report:
Raising a full side proved difficult this year having lost a few regulars due to retirement and with other commitments getting in the way of the youngsters. However, in true wandering spirit the Grannies kindly leant a fielder and on one occasion their captain took a screamer of a catch under a high ball on the long off boundary – a true reflection of the quality individuals that the Grannies have.
Despite both teams being slightly depleted, this did not impact on the outcome of the game and in fact ended in a close fought contest with only a small margin between the sides. Weather conditions were yet again excellent (third year running) and a slightly cool breeze made for a perfect day in the middle.
Matt Shales, skippering the side, won the toss and decided to stick the Grannies into bat, this partly due to Mark Hunt, recently back from injury, being fit with a ball in hand and a string of men behind him to turn their arm over and therefore seem a wise decision. Kemal Alam on debut opened and bowled well. Two Grannies batsmen scored hundreds and well hit they were.
It was a long 53 overs in the field and we had about 45 overs to chase down the score. Shales and Salter got off to a great start – at tea we were 120 without loss. Salter hit cleanly but fell and was replaced by Bradshaw. He batted beautifully to support Shales until he fell to the grasp of long on. Two quick wickets saw our hopes fade despite Shales reaching a huge 139. Given there were only 19 players nearly 600 runs were scored. The Grannies deserved their win.
