Result: Lost by 2 wickets
Report:
A challenging green top coupled with some decent swing bowling from the Hurlingham openers meant runs were tough to come by for Stragglers and no real partnerships were cemented. Sam Kennedy showed what can be achieved by bowling one side of the wicket and rightly got his just rewards of 5-46 of sixteen overs. Champagne moment of the day was his father’s catch at first slip to dismiss Tim Carter. Allsop held an end of a while wickets fell regularly at the other end. Carter, Hooey and Asher supported Conibear who hit a fine 65. We did well to reach 240 considering we were 148 for 7.
The wind and sun had dried the wicket nicely in time for Hurlingham’s innings and they set about chasing our score with some purpose. A break through from Hooey saw a succession of wickets fall and for the remainder of the game the result hung by a thread. At 140 for 5 Stragglers were on top but a gritty and strong batting performance from Salt (who also bowled well ) and ably supported by Woodford saw our lead dwindle and despite Salt falling for 98 a few short from victory, Hurlingham scored the winning runs for 8 wickets down of the second to last ball of the day. A great game played in the right spirit with ebbs and flows for both teams throughout the day.
