Match Report
MCC won the toss and (unsurprisingly) Stragglers took the field first. There was an inspired opening spell from Rupert Harmsworth and Will Downes that both kept the runs down and took the wickets of some batsmen of high repute, thanks to excellent catching behind the wicket. One Surrey Championship batsmen crashed a return catch to Rupert who parried it in self-preservation, then juggled it only for Charles to dive over from short mid-off to complete the catch that left them both sprawled over the wicket and the batsmen reluctant to move in disbelief! Further inroads in a superb session left the MCC at 89 for 5 at lunch. After lunch the remaining MCC batsmen were able to get on top briefly but were pulled back again to leave the MCC to declare early on 204 for 9.
Then things started to go wrong.
Although the MCC’s enormous batting strength had been overcome they also had an extremely strong opening attack of an ex-pro and Surrey Championship player who took early wickets through some good bowling and some poor shots too. At tea we had succumbed to 40 for 4. After tea wickets fell regularly again through poor batting and some excellent bowling when their top bowlers returned, and despite a spirited effort late on, we were all out for 100.
Special mention goes to Rupert for his bowling, Will Downes who might be encouraged to join us again, the general fielding of (most) of the Stragglers, and to Sye for excellent captaincy and for entertaining everyone with that over when he made 22 yards seem a very long way indeed.
