Match Report

Result: Stragglers won by 6 wickets

On a rather misty, overcast morning, coupled with a green deck and moisture in the air, the day got off to a good start with Russell winning the toss and putting IZ into bat. It wasn’t long until Mark Hunt (in similar style to the previous week) was producing in swingers and the odd one to nip away from the left hander Bartholemew. Hunt made the first break through trapping Stephenson, closely followed up the next over with an unplayable ball to Bartholomew from Harmsworth, creating some reverse swing and bowling the bemused batsman through the gate.

From this point on, the Stragglers were maintaining some good pressure from both ends, helped by some sharp fielding, in particular from Joe Cavanagh at backward point allowing very little past him. With enough pressure built up, it was timely to hand the ball to Tim Lerwill, who with a heavily packed off side, bowled to his field and picked up a fine 4 wickets for 33 off 16 overs. Surendran was also proving too much for the IZ, and with a good variation of pace and flight, he too was finding the edge of the bat and picked up a worthy 3 for 32 off of 12 overs.

IZ made a slightly below par score of 159 all out before tea, however there was a need for batsman on this pitch to apply themselves and play the ball under their noses when straight! With a couple of early wickets the Stragglers were somewhat struggling on 19 for 3 and it was then time for last weeks debutant, Bradshaw to come to the crease. In fine form with the bat and once again showing his undoubtable class, he frustrated the IZ field (little did the IZ know of his capabalities when they dropped him at second slip second ball!), playing a variety of strokes and being quick to latch onto anything short of a length. At the other end, Russell played the anchor role well until well after tea and with only 10 runs to score. His injection of pace on a second run was something that was lost a few years ago, and despite putting his head down, was struggling with direct hit from 50 yards out!

In the 28th over of the innings, a half volley driven down the ground by Bradshaw finished another fine win, and yet again a solid knock of 119 not out.

It must be mentioned that the quality of bowling and sharp fielding throughout the day was the difference between the two sides, and with Bradshaw currently in unstoppable form, the result ended in a convincing and well deserved win for the club.
