Match Result: Stragglers of Asia won by 43 runs
Match Report:
Stragglers of Asia won the toss and on a clear sunny day decided to bat first. Some fine shots from Gleave and Salter who finished on 105 not out, coupled with Shales’ quick fire 64 allowed the Stragglers of Asia to declare on 282 -4 in just 40 overs.
With a strong line of batsmen, the HAC seemed to be cruising along until the run out of Jones which allowed the Stragglers to put pressure on the remaining batsman through the spin twins of Waymouth (3-36) and Carter (2-35).
With two wickets needed and three overs left, on a beautiful batting wicket a draw seemed inevitable, but Burton had other ideas and in his penultimate over bowled a wicket maiden.
However he saved the best until the last ball of the HAC innings, when he cut one back six inches which hit the top of the last man’s off-stump giving the Stragglers a well-deserved win.
The following is an extract from an email sent by the HAC captain following the match:
“With regard to your report, I would like to add this;
It was a great pleasure hosting the Stragglers at Armoury House. The match was played with great spirit and energy. With the game ending on the final delivery was a great finish. A credit to all players. We wish to thank-you for making it one of the best games for the AXI this season and look forward to next year’s fixture.”
I will gladly mention this at our next committee meeting. The spirit of the game is often overlooked, however our game proved there is much fun to be had whilst retaining the competitive edge.”
