Report: A strong 11 arrived at the ground ready to make amends for last year’s tight defeat. Captain Lerwill started the day well by winning the toss and duly elected to field. A wise decision. Guest Edd Burton opened the bowling with Tim Lerwill and they both kept a tight line. 5 overs without a run and then a flurry of wickets saw Edd pick up a double wicket maiden and 5 maidens in his first 5 overs. A peach to Queries skipper James Melhorn (also a Straggler) saw James leave one which cut back to clatter the stumps. A tidy rally from the Queries before and after lunch saw them all out for 171 in about 50 overs.
Buoyed by the success fielding, the batsmen set about chasing down the total in prompt fashion, but with wickets falling consistently on the way. All of the top 4 got in and contributed well, but it was left to guest Tom Bond and Tim Lerwill to knock off the last 50 or so runs, with Tom just falling at the death.
It was heartening to see the Queries travel to Pangbourne for the second year running and we thank them for that. Following the game a good number popped to the pub in Tidmarsh to reflect on the day and the bonhomie was obvious to all.
Highlights:
After 5 overs WQ had not yet scored.
Edd Burton’s maiden michelle for SOA and that his first 5 overs were all maidens with the 4th being a double wicket maiden.
Having the pleasure of both the President and Chairman playing.
