Report: On a scorching hot day, the Stragglers won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a pitch tailor made for batting. That view was quickly revived as the Stragglers’ top order slumped to 11-3 in a manner similar to that of the English top order at Lords only a day earlier against a barrage of short pitched bowling. Although Matt Shales responded with some crashing drives his resistance was short lived and when he departed for a swashbuckling 39 the Stragglers were 47-5 and looking unlikely to survive until the lunch interval. However, Tony Hooper, ably supported by guest wicket keeper, Matt Suckling regrouped and by eschewing the short pitched stuff and putting away the bad deliveries began to rebuild the Stragglers’ innings with a stand of 65 until Tony was well taken low down at cover by Eltham for a composed 30. With the departure of Paddy Cunliffe on the stroke of lunch, the Stragglers were 124-7.

The Stragglers fortunes did not improve post lunch as Doggett snared the club President and then our guest South Oxfordshire Amateur, Andrew Moss in successive deliveries. 130-9. However, the baking sun had calmed the pitch down enough for RPH batting at 11 with a broken finger to navigate the hat trick delivery as he supported Suckling as the latter completed a patient half century as they put on 49 for the final wicket before RPH was caught at extra cover and the Stragglers bowled out for 179.

Such a score was well below par on a pitch that was getting better and better to bat on by the minute and the Stragglers’ only hope lay in taking early, cheap wickets. However, such wickets did not materialise as the South Oxfordshire Amateurs rattled off 123 for the first wicket until Hall was run out by a direct hit shortly after completing his 50. This did nothing to slow the run rate as the skipper tried desperately to staunch the flow of runs and while Paddy Cunliffe was able to at least deny Phillips a well-deserved century when he had him caught for 93 but by then there could only be one outcome and the South Oxfordshire Amateurs hit the running run shortly before the start of the final hour.
