Report: The afternoon of Wednesday the 16th of July saw the Stragglers take on the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. For at least 5 of the Stragglers, this was a return to where they had learned their craft, some more recently than others. As a backdrop, the normally imperious facade of Old College is currently obscured by a lattice of scaffolding and sheeting as the timeless building gets a spring clean, perhaps a mirror on the current state of the Army. On a pitch notoriously slow and low and weather conducive to swing, RMAS ‘chose’ to bowl and the Stragglers opened with Ahmed and Tim Lerwill striding forth. RMAS opened with two spritely seamers who managed to get much lateral seam movement. Lerwill reacted accordingly, playing late as possible but Mudz Ahmed, Ben Parkyn and John Barry all had their stumps rearranged playing down wrong lines with the score still low.
A brief flurry of runs between Marcus Massey and Tim saw the score reach 97 for 4 before guest player Martin Harrison was finally able to offer Tim the support he required. Tim mixed some deft late cuts with regal drives whilst Martin rode his luck and varied his shots; some tennis, some golf and rarer cricket ones. The score ticked over at a good rate and when Tim fell for a innings best and superb 74 the board showed 146 for 5. Further pinch hitting from Martin (run out for 48) and prodigious riding of luck saw the Stragglers finish on a defendable 195 for 6 with perhaps the highlight being some excellent striking by the prodigal Charles Carr-Smith. RMAS’s fielding fitness precluded many a quick single and plaudits were due to Officer Cadet Bordell who finished with a very respectable 3 for 21 from 7 overs.
A delightful tea charged the bowling attack led by Charles Carr-Smith and the loaned Colour Sergeant Cliff Kendrick who both got very quick wickets leaving RMAS in a Benaud delight of two for two off two and then 3 for 27 as Carr-Smith proved too hot to handle. In the year that we commemorate World War 1, RMAS then took to the trenches and Officer Cadets Bedford and Bishop entrenched, scoring at a steady rate. Carr-Smith junior was replaced by Carr-Smith senior to try to break the partnership but their eyes were in and the scoring continued. Rob Pollock-Hill replaced Kendrick yet still the cadets scored freely and it was only when the skipper swapped RPH’s end did the break-through occur, Rob using considerable flight and guile to bowl OCdt Bishop one short of 50. Rob then rattled through the middle order with two more spinner’s wickets firmly wrestling the momentum away from RMAS. The re-introduction of medium pace and lively Carr-Smith junior kept the wickets tumbling, the pressure culminating in the run out of Bedford for an excellent 84, RMAS finishing all out for 188.
A very good finish to an enthralling game, with the initiative metronoming several times throughout. This maintains to be a great fixture for the Stagglers and we were very well hosted by the Cadets. A huge thank you to Oli Lerwill for organising the fixture and to Mike Ablett for umpiring. A good turn out from the stalwarts with some excellent performances from prospective Stragglers sees this fixture in rude health for next year.
