Report: After a disappointing lead up to the game last year whereby the Grannies failed to get a side out, this year we were lucky enough to field what we thought would be two very well matched sides. Special mention must go to Mark Hunt, who kingly recruited 4 players for the game, including Mike Lyons a local schoolmaster who has a strong playing background having represented Sussex 2nd X1.

Reid and Lyons opened the batting with the former playing some delightful cover drives before being caught in the covers attempting to go over the top. With the ball not zipping around this was not an uncalculated shot and the catch was well held. Despite Reid’s departure, Lyons played himself in beautifully, playing the slow pitch well and making good use of any full length deliveries. Freddie Cross was able to hold up the other end after Lyons’ departure and made a well crafted 51 not out coming in at 4. Of particular note was his ability to time the ball off his legs through mid wicked; not too dissimilar from Chris Gayle.

Unfortunately the middle order couldn’t quite offer the resistance and stroke play of Cross and poor shot selection and tight bowling from Gibbs and Garfield resulted in a decision to keep ‘Wild’ Bill Kincaid fresh for a long spell and declare on 228-7. This was a realistic total to defend and enough overs in the day for the Grannies to make a fair go of it.

From the outset the Grannies made inroads into the total and showed great patience and selectiveness when playing the Stragglers’ attack. A very comfortable and mature knock from Hornsby made variation of bowling seem the only option. With the ever reliable and trusty arm of Wild Bill, we were hopeful of a few loose strokes so late in the day, however both Hornsby and Chibber were hard to remove and continued to apply themselves. Interestingly, Hornsby was making his debut for the Grannies and we were not surprised to hear over a few ales later in the day that he had in fact been an Oxford Blue. He carried his bat on 133 not out and he was the real difference between the sides on the day.

For the Stragglers, Mark Hunt was the standout bowler who created some lovely in-swing, picking up 2 of the 3 wickets to fall. The standard and performance in the field was of a good standard throughout the afternoon. After just 25 overs the Grannies comfortably reached the target finishing on 229-3.
