Report: It is with much regret that I have to report the Loss of the Patiala Bowl to Eastbourne College; we were Holders for the shortest possible period! However, I was able to get 11 players on the field against many odds including two drop outs on the eve of the game. For this we are indebted to the School who produced three good, keen young cricketers all of whom gave of their best. The 11th, a 19yr old Australian, who is pro-ing at Seaford and turned up on spec was considered too good by the College Staff and was used as a ‘supernumerary’. Sadly this affected his mental approach when his all too evident ability was actually required! I record also the help given freely by Sye Razvi who found a player, Tom Whyte, at 9pm the evening before. Support such as this is most welcome.

After the good news, the bad – really bad: we were bowled out for 59 half an hour before Lunch; the result of pure poor batting. Arguably two wickets were earned, two were triggered but …… Lunch was taken in sombre mood before the game was lost though 4 wickets were taken for 35 runs and for only a few more the game could have been turned on its head: England and Stragglers’ too.

At 2.30pm, It seemed a waste of glorious weather, a good pitch and a warm welcome to rush home with our tails between our legs so the game morphed into a T20, the boys carried on batting and those who travelled to bowl got a longer bowl as well as our pupil contingent who showed up well. Asked to chase down 119, it seemed well, within our grasp until, yet again, wickets tumbled through unfortunate decisions. Reaching 109, we fell short by 10 runs and lost the second game of the day.

At the end, I handed the Patiala Bowl back to the winning Captain, Jason, and left Eastbourne sad that all the effort to find players and call in favours, had come to nought and with serious concerns about the health of Wandering Cricket. The one positive to hold on to was that the College did play a game, that those prepared to commit to our Club had a game on a most wonderful day tailor made for cricket. The fixture must continue and our playing members must be attracted to visit such a venue – to see our silver and history & understand where the Club started if for no other reason.
