Match Report: Wellington won the toss and batted on a cloudy breezy day. Rain was in prospect, but fortunately we got the game in by the time the showers arrived.
The wicket played beautifully as always on the New Ground, and Doggart for the school played some lovely strokes in his 72 runs. Harris and Miles toiled away for a wicket each, but the highlight was Charlie Sayers high class leg-spin bowling. He took 3 wickets, but dropped catches, and close shaves, meant 5 wickets would have been appropriate. A beautiful googly which the batsman dutifully left and then watched as the ball hit middle stump was a great sight, and caused great hilarity amongst the spectators. Sayers is over from Sydney where he plays 1st grade, so it was terrific to see his skills.
Alex Gotley rounded off the innings with some sharp bowling, and the 197 total with a true pitch, and a fast outfield, didn’t seem enough runs.
A steady start by Stragglers set the pattern of all batsmen getting a start, and then either throwing it away, or getting themselves out. Harris and Sayers put on 70 in the most fruitful of the partnerships, but within reach of the target we generously let the boys back in the game, and it took a lusty blow from Alex Gotley to win the game. Bill Kincaid our faithful No 11 was all padded up, and very reluctant, and was mightily relieved as the ball rocketed over the rope.
Another successful day, with a spread put on by the school after the match, a welcome sight for our travelling XI.
