Sunday 16 June 2019 Stragglers of Asia vs Band of Brothers
Result: Lost by 4 wickets
Report: On a wet and blustery day in deepest darkest Kent, the Stragglers side assembled. In his enthusiasm for getting out as strong a side as possible, Match Manager Matt Shales had slightly miscounted and so we turned up with 12. Matt Shales therefore played for the BB side, who only had 10. Phil McDuell took over the captaincy. Unfortunately for him Matt had already lost the toss by this stage and so the Stragglers were asked to bat on a green and lively pitch. The top order battled hard in difficult conditions and against a very good bowling attack. Sadly for the batsmen there was no let up, as all the change bowlers were as accurate as the openers. Phil McDuell was the mainstay of the innings. Opening up he scored a very impressive 52, the highest score in the match. Some impressive striking from Paddy McDuell and George Humphries (G) saw the Stragglers post 190 for 7 declared in 55 overs.
The BB had a maximum of 48 overs to chase this total. Their openers (including the Stragglers Match Manager!) got the BB off to a quick start, despite some very good bowling from Sam Middleton (G) and Jonny McDuell. IN the last over before tea, Paddy McDuell bowled Matt Shales with what he described as the best ball he ever bowled. After tea the BB continued to bat positively, but some impressive bowling from George Humphries (G) and Paddy McDuell removed the BB top and middle order. However, the Stragglers did not quite have enough runs on the board, especially as the pitch got easier and the outfield quickened up immensely. The BB reached their total 6 down with nearly 10 overs to spare. The moment of the match had to be James Melhorne taking a diving catch at leg slip, a position that the captain and employed for most of the innings.
It was an extremely enjoyable game played in fantastic spirit throughout. Sadly, the BB emerged as winners by 4 wickets.
