Match Report:
Stragglers won the toss and inserted the Adastrians on a hard but green track, whereupon openers Phil McDuell and Doug Porter set to work and were unfortunate only to have a single wicket to show from their opening spells (12 overs on the spin for Phil). The introduction of spin in the form of the McDuell brothers, Paddy and Jonny, continued to apply pressure on the Adastrians batsmen, prising out the rest of the top order, before Harry Pilcher joined in, picking up wickets with a lethal half tracker and full toss. After Adastrians decided to bat on after tea, Paddy McDuell and Doug Porter wrapped up the final three wickets, leaving Stragglers a chase of 200 in around 40 overs, having managed to squeeze in 52 overs in well under 3 hours. Overall, it was an excellent effort in the field and with the ball, given the true nature of the pitch and fast, bumpy outfield, complete with a short boundary on one side.
The Chairman opened up with Will Russell, both of whom were initially watchful in the face of a well-disciplined Adastrians new ball attack. Russell was just starting to unfurl his full range of strokeplay when he was bowled by one that nipped back. Tim Harris likewise settled in before smiting some mighty straight boundaries, but also perished in the teens. Adam Abbott also fell swiftly, having set about a busy start to his innings. Meanwhile, the Chairman had accelerated past 50 and was continuing to accelerate with boundaries flowing regularly. However, despite Joe carrying his bat for a magnificent 103*, the return of the opening bowlers for the final 8 overs did just enough to restrict him and Chris Brewster from overhauling the Adastrians total, with 15 more still required at the end.
Overall, a very enjoyable day and a strong Stragglers performance in all departments, one that fully deserved the victory that narrowly eluded us.
