Result: Match drawn
Report:
After the traditional meet at the Maidstone Services the ten strong Stragglers convoyed up to Torry Hill. After losing the toss we were sent into the field. Jonny McDuell and Alex Asher took the new ball and put in a good display, restricting the BB openers. Their hard work paid off with Jonny taking a couple of wickets towards the end of his spell. Alex was working hard into a stiff breeze, but didn’t get the rewards he deserved. Jonny was replaced by his father and Alex by his candidate Alexei Franks. Both did a sterling job in tricky bowling conditions, with Phil picking up a wicket, well caught by Nino standing up to the stumps. He kept beautifully all day, the new Pace-Maker working wonders for him. The skipper brought himself on for a few overs either side of lunch, but was delighted to call his spell to an end. The opening bowlers returned to finish off the innings. The BB made 295 for 4 declared for off 49 overs, but this total does not reflect the effort of bowlers and fielders alike.
Matt Cavanagh and Will Russell got our reply off to a great start seeing us safely through to tea. They continued well after tea until Matt fell victim to some off spin. Will continued on to his 50, and he was supported by a very entertaining cameo from last minute call up Rob Baxter. Will eventually fell for 78 to an absolute jaffer. The middle order of Pilcher, Shales, and Franks contributed a few, but the stage was set for McDuell Junior, 36 not out, and Senior, 22 not out to see us safely through to a total of 220 for 7 off 48 overs. The draw was a fair result to what was a thoroughly enjoyable game of cricket. In the words of the BB Match Manager, “Great game played with some even better blokes.”
