Sunday 21 May 2017 Stragglers of Asia vs Grannies

Result: Stragglers won by 7 wickets

Report:

We were extremely fortunate to have managed to play this game given the heavy downpours during the week. A full XI formed up and Russell won the toss sticking the Grannies into bat having had his eyes on the green wicket and overcast skies. Battersby got off to very good start for the Grannies dispatching any short balls and looking solid one end, however the much feared and known abilities of Hornsby were quickly put aside as Blackhurst trapped him LBW going onto the back foot. But the bludgeoning pull shots from Battersby meant that the scoreboard was ticking along with Chhibber providing more of an anchor the other end. However the removal of Battersby 10 overs before lunch for 46 changed the momentum of the game. Fielding was sharp throughout and the ever mounting pressure on the grannies to reach a declarable score after 53 overs resulted in their decleration on 239 for 9 off 57 overs. Pick of the bowling came from Conway with 65-3 and a most heroic spell of 21 straight overs, 2 wickets for 81 bowled by Tom Knight (g) which undoubtedly set us up well and put us into this strong position.

Freddie Mills (g) got us off to a solid start and had much patience at the crease, never looking to force any shots and took the shine off the ball from what was a promising looking opening bowling pair for the Grannies. Of note was his ability to deal with anything short on the leg side and was never afraid to go aerial! Salter joined him at the other end after the 1st wicket and got off to his usual start, caressing the ball around the park with some delightful cover drives and cut shots. Salter made a quick fire and impressive 73 before succumbing to the bowling of Patel caught and bowled. Two Freddies at the crease and the nerves were settled back in the dressing room, with Mills moving into his 80s and Cross keeping the scoreboard ticking; looking compact and established from ball one. He was unfortunately out to Shah with 10 overs left in the day, and it was then left to Pilcher to keep Mills on strike to allow him to hit the winning runs and bring up his tonne. This he did most unselfishly (although one well time back foot drive nearly ended Mills’s dream) and Mills ended up carrying his bat on 103 not out- a well crafted innings with plenty of entertainment along the way.

A comfortable 7 wicket victory for the Stragglers and first of the season.
