Stragglers of Asia vs Cryptics
Result: Lost by 18 runs
Report: To lose one player on the morning of the game may be regarded as misfortune, but to lose two looks like carelessness. Luckily, both sides arrived one short, despite having full sides the night before. The day only improved both on the field and above it. We lost the toss and took to the field with a spring in our step. While wickets did not come quickly, we contained the openers with decent bowling (Conway and Hooper) and some smart fielding. A couple of sharp catches went down, but we went into lunch in a buoyant mood having snagged three and one with the last ball of the session. Cryptics batted sensibly and the score gradually accumulated. After lunch wickets fell more quickly as the McDuells and a return of the openers got results. Our scorecard was blemished only by one over of destructive bludgeoning from Andrews.
Knowing that we would get at least a similar number of overs, the atmosphere was one of steely determination and Salter and Cross marched to the middle. It did not take long for Salter to march back. Cross and Hooper however, had other ideas and took the game to the Cryptics with style and grit. Both fell in their forties and Cross’ was particularly pleasing to watch. Game on, or so we thought. Unfortunately, other than a fantastic partnership from McDuell senior and Trapani of over 50 we fell 18 short with around 10 overs remaining.
Despite the result, it really was a good day and both sides commented on the quality of the ground, and food as well as the good standard of cricket and the healthy spirit in which the game was played.
