Sunday 11 September 2016 Stragglers of Asia vs Broadhalfpenny Brigands
Result: Won by 129 runs
Report:
After torrential Friday & Saturday rain (Goodwood washed out!) Sunday dawned bright with a gentle south-westerly to help dry a sodden outfield. Play commenced on time. One of the most glorious days of the summer. Stragglers elected to bat.
After a “wobbly” start, 2 for one in the first five minutes, disaster was averted. Matt Shales and Jo Cavanagh steadied the ship with an eighty run stand. Able support from skipper Tim, Nick Hadcock (41 no) and Holtie saw us to a comfortable 195 (outfield was still slow until tea).
I am not sure whether it was too many cream buns (best tea on the circuit!), the damp patch just short of a length or some remarkable Straggler bowling. Jon Parker 4-18; Leo Hadcock 4-17.Even for the redoubtable Brigands there was no way back from 33-5! They also had only ten men, due to illness on the day.
So thanks to brilliant Match management by Mike Halliwell (several bottles of Port were consumed) and some on-field adroitness by Skipper Tim we had the first convincing win for some years. No doubt the Brigands will seek revenge Next year.
(2018. 250th Anniversary of cricket at Hambledon. Happy times ahead!)
