Match Report:

On freezing and later very wet day, a fine group of Stragglers took the field at Middleton Stoney. At one end Tim Lerwill bowled beautifully with craft and guile at the start taking three early wickets, followed by Straggler of the match Tom Vila who blasted another five. At the other end the McDuell family, sequentially Phil, Jonny and Paddy, bowled tightly with spinners Jonny and Paddy bowling faster than ‘seamer’ Phil. While Tom took his best figures for the Stragglers, the fielding, exemplified by Chris Joyner, was very impressive on such a cold day. Having stated himself unable to bowl due to his troublesome knees, Chris then threw himself about the field saving countless runs and a fine catch. Terrific catching from Joe Cavanagh (running flat-out skier), Nino Trapani (natty and sharp behind the stumps) and Paddy and Tim solid under pressure – the catching made the difference and we eventually bowled the oppo just before 5pm, the immovable tea-time, which had us reluctantly agree to twenty overs from 630pm. Heavy rain then followed and with the bell rung with no consultation, play resumed in the rain having lost sometime while waiting for the drizzle to slow. Batting with mud underfoot, wet long grass rendering their 130 worth far more, and with dark skies, our batting was less good than the bowling, and with wickets having fallen too early despite glimpses of quality from Conor Brown, Joe, James, Simon and Jonny, and with seven less overs bowled at us, by the last ten overs faced us, a draw had become our only honourable exit. Tom and Chris batted diligently and with some style to bring us home safely in the dark.
