Sunday 7 August 2016 Stragglers of Asia vs Harrow Wanderers
Result: Lost by 26 runs
Report: Despite having 14 men available 10 days prior to the match, we took to the field with 10 only. The weather was wonderful and we won the toss. Harrow batted first and Tom Vila’s opening half tracker smashed into the openers off stump in the first ball of the game. Harrow kept the scoreboard ticking over, but wickets fell regularly early on. Tom Calder’s tight lines saw success and he was supported ably by Fred Cross and the indefatigable Joe Cavanagh. Conor Brown stepped up and turned his arm over to hold down an end admirably and Will Russell picked up a couple late on. Harrow’s tail wagged strongly and 226 was posted after 40 overs. We came off having fielded well with 10 and feeling positive despite letting the last 3 overs get away from us.
A firm start from Alex Asher and guest Ruaridh Goodwin was not maintained and we lost wickets all too regularly early on. Joe Cavanagh, Tom Calder and Conor Brown impressed with the bat and our score quickly mounted – Conor scoring rapidly before succumbing to Harrow skipper Ludo Compton. None made 50 and the tail did not wag despite Nino’s darts between the wicket. Despite falling 26 short we surprised ourselves in the field and then I think surprised Harrow with how close we got. With 6 overs to go, the game was in the balance. Tea was excellent and post match drinks were well attended too.
