Match Report by Mark Winstanley
Second Day of the Year of the Goat / Ram / Sheep and the Stragglers of Asia present at Wong Nai Chung Gap to take on HKCC.
Despite the threat of rain and the covers blowing off overnight, the pitch looked in good condition for the fixture. The toss completed, HKCC are batting first.
Debutant, Jason Kjestrup opens the bowling with Adrian Waters and both claim an early wicket. HKCC batsmen were being aggressive, however, each of the bowlers stuck to their task and we claimed wickets at regular intervals thanks to a very good performance in the field and most chances going to our designated (young?) fielders – two catches each for Keith Hempshall and Craig Johnstone and sharp chances to Callow, Kjestrup and Sabine.
HKCC declared at 9 down for 243 – the innings centred around a terrific 103 by Kabir Sodhi, a junior who has come through the ranks at HKCC – with solid contributions from Kieran Hale 33, Simon Hung 29 and Henry Lam 16 not out. Kjestrup claimed the best figures with 4 for 89, Stormy Waters bowled very well for 2 for 57. Johnstone and Evans contributed solid spells and a wicket each and the skipper took one at the death after asking Martin Sabine to warm up several times.
So, SoA were looking at an asking rate of 7+ an over to claim victory, however HKCC skipper Push Sharma offered to extend the cut off time which enabled us to bat 39 overs in the end (still an asking rate of 6.25).
Miles and Hempshall opened, Keith attempted to be too aggressive, too early which meant the experienced pair of Miles and Sabine were together in the middle, Miles fell for 29 with the score 2 for 52, Doug Mulcock joined Martin and got us to 100 before falling trying to up the pace. So 3 for 100 with 15 overs to go, Craig Johnstone joins Martin in the middle and both mix boundaries with singles until Martin is unfortunately run out for a well-made 66.
The asking rate got over 12 an over at one stage but Craig ensured we stayed in touch and I hit a couple of boundaries in between trying to make sure Craig stayed in strike and that I didn’t pass out from having to run two threes. Eleven needed off the last over and three off the last ball meant the CNY crowd at the Gap were kept entertained and the players focussed.
Sadly, it was not to be and SoA ended up on 241 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, but what an exciting draw. Craig unbeaten at the end on 73 off 40 balls or so: terrific batting to get us so close.
Thanks to Push and the HKCC team for playing in great spirit and to HKCC for hosting. A fine spread courtesy of off spinner and Exec Chef Evans topped off a great day.
