Result: Lost by 2 runs
Match Report: The torrential rain of the night before and a downpour just before 11:30 meant that the start was delayed by 45 minutes. This was our first game at Pangbourne College this season, as the boys’ game had been cancelled a month or so before and we were all looking forward to playing on the picturesque ground and making use of the brand new pavilion.
It was a good toss to win and the Queries were immediately sent in to bat. While their opener reached 42 with some style the opening pair of Hamilton and Sutton bowled decent lines. Guest (OP and housemaster) took two good wickets and a mammoth spell from the Chairman (17 overs either side of lunch without breaking sweat) saw him take a ‘fifer’ in fantastic fashion. Guest (another OP!) Tom Forsdyke bowled an incredibly accurately and with real pace to take two wickets in 14 overs. Guest Pete Roseff took the final wicket via a quite remarkable catch from Sutton at short midwicket.
So we had bowled the WQs out for 158 in 43 overs, which just left the batsman with what appeared to be a straightforward task.
As always with the Stragglers, we did not make things easy for ourselves. Both Cavanaghs (Joe and Matt), Cross and Russell all got starts, but no one batted through. Even when we had reached 124 for 7 we remained confident, but frustratingly we fell just three runs short of victory.
The catering was impressive and the facilities great. The wicket is only two seasons old and perhaps needs a little more time to bed in, as many kept low. The WQs were obviously very happy with the result and as always, it was a pleasure it play them – at least this year we fielded 11 of our own players!
More of the same for next year please (but with a win)!
