Result: Abandoned due to rain

Match Report: On a beautifully sunny day, warm enough for even the horses of the estate to be persuaded to watch the day’s entertainment, Stragglers lost the toss and were unexpectedly put in to bat. Sensing some underhand skulduggery by Stage CC, skipper Asif Padhani sent in 2 left handers, Dominic Harte and Sye Razvi to open the innings and attempt to thwart the opposition’s plans. This worked as the pair put on 63 for the first wicket, Dominic eventually falling to a delivery lacking in bounce.

The skipper then forged a second wicket partnership of 72 before Sye succumbed for 55 after lunch with the score on 135. Asif went on to make 75 and the declaration came at 3.45pm with the Stragglers on 244 for 6 off 51 overs.

The Stage’s response was muted, not entirely surprising with quality opening bowling from guests N Chaudhry and T Whyte. To help tempt the batsmen, Stragglers then posted 3 slips and 4 gullies, mid-off and square leg, a field not seen since Lillie and Thompson against the W Indies in the late 70s. However the Stage could not take advantage of the enormous gaps in the field and seemed happy to play out for a draw, praying for rain, which duly arrived and the match was eventually abandoned in the 32nd over, their reply ending at 131 for 6.
