Match Report: On an overcast but warm afternoon, the Stragglers won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch tailor made for batting and offering no real assistance to the bowlers and the only real danger to the Stragglers top order seemed to be themselves. Almost all the top order batsmen scored freely and quickly but yet they almost all managed to find ways of getting themselves out, whether it was burying a long hop into mid wicket’s midriff, charging down the wicket to a good length ball or simply padding up to the straight one. Amongst these acts of cricketing hari-kari, Sye Razvi stroked an elegant unbeaten 57 while at the other end, Mick Green bludgeoned 59 off 29 balls and guest Tom Dillon also smacked a quick fire 34 not out off 28 balls in his first knock in just over 2 years to allow the skipper to declare on 253-5 and allow the Stragglers some 3 and a half hours to bowl out the 9 man HAC.
The Stragglers started brightly with both Jonathan Parker and Pradeesh bowling tightly despite a complete absence of swing for Jonathan or turn for Pradeesh so that despite the loss of an early wicket the HAC batsman were able to re-group. A late drop out due to injury also reduced the Stragglers bowling options and so containment rather than outright attacking bowling was the order of the day and after a period of good pressure the plan seemed to bear fruit with three quick wickets in less than 15 minutes leaving the HAC on 95-4. Unfortunately this is where things started to go wrong: the fielding which had been so reliable started to fray with a couple of sharp chances going down causing bowlers to lose heart and drop the ball short allowing the two HAC batsman to accumulate runs with little need to take risks and as the ball softened and the bowlers tired, only one result was ever on the cards and the HAC hit the winning runs with some 11 overs of the day remaining to run out deserved winners by 6 wickets. A disappointing result especially after such a strong batting performance but a good game played in excellent spirit and rounded off in the same manner in the Artillery Arms outside the ground.
